OTTAWA -- A strong foot and a stingy defence was enough to earn the Montreal Alouettes a 15-7 win over the Ottawa Redblacks Friday night. But it wasnt pretty. Kicker Sean Whyte accounted for nine of the Alouettes points as he booted two field goals, two singles and a convert in the victory. The win was the fourth in the past five games for the Alouettes (5-8), who are in first place in the East Division following a 1-7 start to the season. Ottawa (1-11), meanwhile, has now dropped nine straight games. However, the Redblacks did give their fans a rare treat in Fridays loss. Prior to a touchdown run from running back Jonathan Williams in the final minute of the second quarter, Ottawa hadnt scored a touchdown at home since defensive lineman Jonathan Williams had an interception return for a touchdown in the opening two minutes against the Calgary Stampeders back on Aug. 24th -- a touchdown drought of 33 days. That was all the scoring the Redblacks had as their offence sputtered after scoring a season-high 32 points during a loss on the road to the Saskatchewan Roughriders last Sunday. It has nothing to do with being at home, we just have to make it happen, Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris said. We had ample opportunities but we didnt convert on third and shorts on multiple occasions. We just have to be better. Its frustrating because its a game, like how many others, that we could have won. The only offence in the second half were a pair of punt singles -- one for 54 yards and the other 65 in the opening seven minutes of the third quarter -- and a 16-yard field goal nine minutes into the fourth from Whyte. Neither quarterback was particularly effective. Burris completed 25 of 32 passes for 253 yards while Jonathan Crompton was 14 of 29 for 181 yards. Burris had the Redblacks on the Montreal seven-yard line with two seconds to play, but couldnt handle the snap and was sacked. Ottawa drew a penalty on the play in any case, ending the game. Montreal was using a prevent defence on the final series that allowed the Redblacks to move the ball from their own 20-yard line. In the end it worked. You go into a prevent defence and people always say youre preventing yourself from winning, but they had to score a touchdown and then score a two-point conversion, Montreal coach Tom Higgins explained. We did what we needed to do and it might not have been pretty, but it was one of those things that during a course of a season you have to win by hook or by crook. It doesnt matter if the offence does or the defence does it or the special teams. The Redblacks had more opportunities in the first half of the game, but after 30 minutes it was the Alouettes who were more opportunistic. Montreal led 10-7 at the half, but that lead was 10-0 until the final minute of the second quarter when Williams scampered 23 yards to score the Redblacks first offensive touchdown at home in just under 16 quarters of football. Prior to that the Alouettes got a 14-yard field goal from Whyte 10 minutes into the second quarter and a fumble return for a touchdown from Chip Cox at 14:21. Cox ran the final 50 yards for the TD after Aaron Lavarias recovered the Burris fumble, forced by Bear Woods, and rumbled the initial 25 or so yards before lateralling the ball to his teammate. Hes a big strong guy and when you have a chance on Burris you have to come down hard and pull those arms and go for the ball, Woods said. Were trained to get the ball out and I had a perfect opportunity when Lavarias came in, ran our stunt perfectly and it was a freebie for me. Im glad hes the one that got the fumble recovery because hes the one that set the whole play up. Jasper Simmons and Abdul Kanneh each intercepted a Crompton pass in the first quarter that led to good field position. The interception by Simmons gave the Redblacks the ball on the Montreal 36 but nothing became if it despite a first and goal from the one-yard line. The second interception gave Ottawa the ball on the Montreal 41, but four plays later Burris put the ball on the ground and Montreal took the lead. I was just trying to make a play to help my team win the game, Kanneh said. Its very frustrating because were all competitors and we never want to lose, but its adversity now. As time goes on well get over it and the Ws will start piling up. Were playing good football out there and its just little things that we need to improve on. Once we do the train is going to start moving. The two clubs combined for just 106 yards of total offence in the first half, with 60 of those yards coming from the Redblacks. Oscar Dansk Jersey . LOS ANGELES -- Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings have returned from the Olympic break with a revitalized game and a sharpened playoff focus. The Carolina Hurricanes have neither, and they realize theyre running out of time to get it. Alec Martinez scored the tiebreaking goal on a power play with 11:45 to play, Quick made 24 saves, and the Kings beat the Hurricanes 3-1 Saturday for their third victory in four days since the break. Mike Richards scored his second goal since late November and Justin Williams added an empty-net goal for Los Angeles, which has roared out of the break with three wins in three cities in about 70 hours. The low-scoring Kings put up eight goals at Colorado and Calgary before holding off Carolina in their return to Staples Center. After five scoreless power plays in the first two periods, the Kings finally converted on their sixth. Captain Dustin Brown got the puck behind the Carolina net and fed it to Martinez, who blasted a shot from the slot for his first goal since Jan. 9. "Its no secret we werent happy with our game before the break started," Martinez said. "We worked on a lot of things, and we knew that when we came back, this would be crunch-time, playoff hockey." After two straight trips to the Western Conference finals and a Stanley Cup championship in 2012, the Kings know a few things about post-season grit -- and they know theyll need it just to reach the playoffs this time. Los Angeles had a 1-8-1 stretch shortly before the Olympic break, falling back to the pack in the conference playoff race. The Kings are thoroughly revived after their time off and an eventful Olympics, which included gold medals for Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter along with two surprising victories for Slovenia and Anze Kopitar. The rest of the Kings got several days off and several more days of practice, and both appear to be paying off. "Weve got to bring our best every night right now," Quick said. The Kings have won four straight overall, and Quick appears to be in top form after starting for the U.S. Olympic team in Sochi. He followed up his shutout of the Flames on Thursday with annother strong performance against the Canes, including a handful of spectacular saves over the final two periods.dddddddddddd Andrej Sekera scored and Anton Khudobin stopped 28 shots for the Hurricanes, who have lost three straight on their five-game road trip out of the break. Carolina has lost four straight overall, and the Hurricanes must visit NHL-leading Anaheim and powerful San Jose over the next three days. "We didnt have a lot of good scoring chances, but the ones we did, we didnt capitalize on them," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. "Weve played nine periods now (since the break), and I think were happy with seven of the nine, but we havent gotten any points. Were playing hard and playing well defensively, but were not generating the offence we need to get ahead in these games." Carolina played without forward Alexander Semin, who was scratched with a lower-body injury. The Russian Olympian was hurt Thursday at Dallas, but might return Sunday in Anaheim. "Hes one of our best players, so it hurts having him out," Carolina centre Riley Nash said. "But guys have to fill (the void)." Los Angeles had a fruitless 4-on-3 advantage for 1:09 during the first period, but went ahead in the final minute on a sharp-angled shot by Richards, the veteran centre whose scoring touch has deserted him this season. The goal was his first in 13 games since Jan. 18 and just his second in 37 games since Nov. 25. The Hurricanes tied it up just 41 seconds later on a goal by Sekera. The Slovak Olympians floating shot banked off Kings defenceman Robyn Regehr and beat Quick with 15 seconds left in the first. "We played well and didnt give them a whole lot," Nash said. "It just seems like were finding ways not to win games and not to get points." NOTES: Carolina visited Staples Center for the first time since Oct. 21, 2010. ...
