The Russian looked like a safe bet to become a top 10 player when she cracked the top 50 in 2008 and broke into the top 20 two years later. Since reaching a career-high No. 13 ranking in July 2011, Pavlyuchenkova has struggled to fulfil her potential. They will be dance partners in the end, however. The two Missouri Valley teams will square off Jan. 10 in the FCS championship game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas. North Dakota State is the pre-eminent FCS program and will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight title with its stifling defense. But Illinois State, in NDSUs shadow all season, has the size and athleticism to make this perhaps the Bisons toughest opponent in Frisco. The Bison beat Sam Houston State from the Southland Conference in 2011 and 12, and Towson from CAA Football to end last season. North Dakota State has won the last three meetings, including 28-10 last season. The Jan. 10 title game in Frisco, Texas, will be a fitting end to the 24-team playoffs as it matches fifth-seeded Illinois State (13-1) against second-seeded North Dakota State (14-1), which will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight FCS title. The two teams were crowned Missouri Valley co-champions after not facing each other in the regular season. Illinois State qualified for the championship game for the first time with a clutch fourth-quarter performance after being limited by UNH to only two field goals in the first three quarters. Next up for the second-seeded Bison (14-1) is a return to the national championship game in Frisco, Texas, where on Jan. 10 they will try to win an unprecedented fourth straight FCS title against fellow Missouri Valley Conference co-champion Illinois State (13-1). The first two of North Dakota States three straight wins in the national final came against Sam Houston. The Bison are a combined 57-3 over the last four seasons, and their senior class has the chance to finish with more national championships than losses in their career. Only two other FCS programs, Eastern Kentucky (1979-1982) and Youngstown State (1991-1994), have advanced to four straight title games. The visiting Bearkats (11-5) from the Southland Conference had hoped for a different result under their first-year coach K.C. But the Bison, after playing poorly on offense in first half, ran away from the Bearkats behind Crockett (166 rushing yards, 66 receiving) and their powerful offensive line as well as a defense that slowed down Sam Houstons speed in the skills positions. North Dakota State managed only 99 yards in the first half while taking a 7-3 halftime lead, but the Bison nearly matched that total on their second drive of the third quarter when they began to take control of the game. On the third play, Crockett went undefended coming out of the backfield for a 35-yard reception from quarterback Carson Wentz. On the next play, Crocketts backup, King Frazier, sliced through the Sam Houston defensive line for a 33- yard touchdown run which put the Bison ahead 14-3 midway the quarter. On the first play of North Dakota States next drive, Crockett went around left end to explode for a 55-yard touchdown run which extended the lead to 21-3 with 6:52 remaining in the quarter. The Tennessee Volunteers found that out firsthand, as they will clash with the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2015 TaxSlayer Bowl on Friday afternoon. Tennessee (6-6) was a model of inconsistency throughout the regular season, winning back-to-back outings only twice, taking down Utah State and Arkansas State in non-conference play to kick off the campaign and then later in the schedule with triumphs over South Carolina and Kentucky, with a bye week in between. The program was a mere 3-5 in conference play and finished tied for fourth place in the Eastern Division of the SEC with the Gamecocks. The Vols needed a win in the regular-season finale versus Vanderbilt just to become bowl eligible and played just well enough to squeeze out a 24-14 victory in the meeting at the end of November. It means everything, Vols quarterback Joshua Dobbs said of becoming bowl eligible. That was our goal coming into this season. We wanted to get to a bowl game and get our seniors to a bowl game and then progress from there. This is a stepping-stone to this program and its definitely an exciting time to be here. The first encounter pitted the programs in the 1982 Peach Bowl, with the Hawkeyes capturing a 28-22 win. The Iowa defense again led the charge this season, ranking 18th in the country in yards allowed (334.5 ypg) and eighth in the number of passing yards surrendered (175.8 ypg), helping the program limit foes to 24.0 ppg, a number that would have been considerably lower if not for the fact that the group surrendered a combined 89 points to Maryland and Minnesota in a span of just three weeks. John Lowdermilk led the charge with 95 tackles, adding a team-best three interceptions -- one returned for a touchdowns -- and a couple of forced fumbles to his stat line, while Drew Ott made 12 of his 55 stops behind the line of scrimmage and also led the program with eight sacks. Another strength for Iowa this season was the teams disciplined play which resulted in a mere 3.5 penalties per contest, tied for second-fewest in the nation, resulting in only 28.9 ypg assessed against the Hawkeyes, also second in the FBS. On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Jake Rudock kept the unit moving with his 62.6 percent accuracy and 218.5 ypg through the air. He accounted for 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions, minimizing mistakes in order to get Iowa into a bowl game. Rudock spread the ball around quite well, as 10 players caught a TD pass from either him or C.J. Beathard. Mark Weisman was the main contributor on the ground with his 802 yards and 14 touchdowns, but he averaged just 3.9 yards per attempt, which just happened to be the teams overall average for the campaign. Aiming to stop Weisman and the rest of the Hawkeyes will be Derek Barnett and Curt Maggitt for the Tennessee defense. Barnett started nine of 12 games for the Volunteers and still saw enough time on the field to lead the program with a staggering 20.5 tackles for loss. His 10 sacks was second only to Maggitt who registered 11 sacks and 14.0 TFL on 43 total stops. MESA, Ariz. -- Michael Phelps is entered in three events at his first swimming meet since he retired after the 2012 London Olympics. The 22-time Olympic medallist is set to swim the 50- and 100-meter freestyles and the 100 butterfly at the Arena Grand Prix in Mesa, Arizona, starting next Thursday. Entries were released Friday. Phelps is the top seed in the 100 fly, where he owns the world and American records. He is seeded eighth in the 100 free, which features a loaded field including Olympians Anthony Ervin and Nathan Adrian, along with Yannick Agnel of France, who trains with Phelps in Baltimore, Maryland. Phelps is seeded 28th in the 50 free. The 28-year-old swimmer is planning to compete in fewer and shorter events in his comeback than he did while winning a record 18 Olympic gold medals during the height of his career.
